Five-Year B.S./B.A. Dual-Degree Program with SAS

The five-year, dual-degree program in engineering and the liberal arts/sciences is offered by the School of Engineering (SoE) in cooperation with the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS). The five-year program leads to a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree in any of the engineering programs and a bachelor of arts (B.A.) or B.S. degree in any major offered by the SAS.

For students interested in the five-year B.S./B.A. program, the best path is to start at the School of Engineering from the first year. Typically, students apply to the SAS during their fourth year to complete the five-year B.S./B.A. program. Some students may be able to complete the B.S./B.A. program in four years, in which case, they will need to apply to the SAS in their third year. Students starting at the SAS can also apply to the B.S./B.A. program, in which case, students must apply for a School-to-School transfer into the SoE during their second year in order to complete the dual-degree program. With this option, admission to the SoE is not guaranteed, and students must meet the School-to-School transfer requirement to join the program.

To qualify for both degrees, students must satisfy all the SoE requirements including humanities/social science, technical, and general electives; SAS major requirements and the Core Curriculum requirements; as well as completing a minor in a humanity/social sciences area if students choose a technical major (such as math or computer science) for the B.A. degree. SoE students who are enrolled jointly with SAS in the B.S./B.A. program must earn 30 degree credits beyond the total degree credits required for the B.S. engineering degree alone. Courses used to satisfy requirements for the liberal arts degree may also be used simultaneously to satisfy SoE humanities/social sciences, technical, and general electives if such courses are acceptable for credit toward the B.S. in engineering degree. There is no limit to the number of credits that may be used to simultaneously satisfy the B.S. and B.A. degree requirements.

The program requires that both degrees must be conferred at the same time even if requirements for one degree are completed before the other. The degrees are conferred before the end of the fifth year or earlier if students can complete the requirement for both degrees in four years. Students who complete the B.S./B.A. program will receive two separate degrees/diplomas, one from each school.
